FLOWCAM TRAINING

Background

An Instrumentation grant from the National Science Foundation to Diane McKnight, Natalie Mladenov, Suzanne Anderson, and Mark Williams funded the purchase a FlowCAM to be used for particle analysis in stream and lakes studied by the PIs. These pages are for training use only for scientists and students at INSTAAR, University of Colorado.

The FlowCAM

What is it? The FlowCAM is a microscope equipped with a camera, a flow-through cell, and particle recognition software.

What can it do? The FlowCAM can count the number of particles per volume of fluid imaged. It can separate out particels of different shape and size and count them. Once you develop a library, FlowCAM software identifies and quantifies the amount of specific particles, like algae or pollen, for example. It can perform statistical analyses on your results.
